Cleaning the exterior of the cylinder is an essential step in the refurbishment process: it removes old paint, rust, labels and surface contaminants from the cylinder before repainting and relabelling. The role of external cleaning
External contamination causes four main problems. First: rust and oxidation weaken the cylinder wall, reducing its lifetime and test pressure compliance. Second, old paint and labels that are peeling off do not allow for proper placement of new markings. Thirdly, surface contamination will prevent the new protective coating (paint) from adhering. Fourthly, the uniform, clean appearance is a sign of quality in the eyes of the customer - the refurbished bottle is returned to the market in a new-looking condition.
