Specific features of CO₂ fire extinguisher maintenance
The maintenance of CO₂ fire extinguishers differs from that of dry powder extinguishers in several respects. CO₂ is stored under high pressure (250 bar test pressure), so the hydrostatic test and refilling require particular safety precautions. CO₂ must be recovered within a closed system — its release into the atmosphere should be avoided for climate protection reasons. The cylinder material (steel, ISO 9809-1) is susceptible to corrosion, so both internal and external cleaning are critical.
The steps in the workflow
(1) Valve removal: EL60 or EL60-ATEX. (2) CO₂ recovery: CO₂ transfer pump in a closed system. (3) Internal inspection: required in the case of a hydrostatic test. (4) Hydrostatic test: HT350 test bench set to a test pressure of 250 bar. (5) External cleaning and painting: RCP 270. (6) Refilling with CO₂: using a precision balance (BE series) to the specified quantity. (7) Refitting of valve and marking: EL60 + SPSN1492.
