The maintenance of CO₂ (carbon dioxide) fire extinguishers requires specialised filling and regassing equipment: the safe recovery of the old CO₂, an internal inspection of the cylinder, and the refilling of the cylinder with the exact quantity of new CO₂ as specified. CO₂ filling process
During fire extinguisher maintenance, the CO₂ refilling process is strictly regulated. First, the old CO₂ is recovered (transferred to a larger storage container), followed by an internal inspection of the cylinder (including a hydrostatic test, if due). After the cylinder has been inspected, new CO₂ is filled to the exact marked level — overfilling is dangerous (the cylinder may crack), whilst underfilling reduces the fire extinguisher’s effectiveness.
