Hydrogen (H2) gas cylinders are a key component of the new energy paradigm: they form the basis of sustainable transport, energy storage and fuel cell systems. PWENT offers a complete range of cylinders suitable for hydrogen storage, in accordance with EN ISO 9809 (steel) and the 2014/68/EU PED and 2010/35/EU TPED directives. Our knowledge base article provides a detailed overview of best practices for safe hydrogen storage for businesses.
The challenges of hydrogen storage
Hydrogen is the lightest gas: storing it requires high pressure and the use of specific materials to prevent hydrogen embrittlement. PWENT cylinders are made from special alloy steel or composite materials that are resistant to this phenomenon. The operating pressure range is 200–700 bar, which is suitable for both industrial and vehicle-based systems.
Areas of application
Fuel cell vehicles: H₂-powered versions of cars, lorries and buses. H₂ refuelling stations: backup capacity stored in bundled cylinders. Energy storage: storage of green hydrogen alongside wind farms and solar panel systems. Industrial processes: ammonia production, oil refining, chemical industry. Research and development: laboratory and test applications.
Safety considerations
Handling hydrogen requires special protocols: a ventilated storage room, a non-flammable area, a gas detector and safety valves. PWENT offers a complete package: in addition to the appropriate cylinder, the valves, connectors and safety components required for the storage system are also available. We also take into account the applicable MSZ EN standards and the relevant sections of the ATEX Directive. Ask for expert advice.
